Our Mission

Our Mission is Simple

THE COMMUNITY IS THE EXPERT OF THEIR OWN SPACE.

INCLUSIVITY, COLLABORATION AND EQUITY ARE THE STANDARDS FOR SHAPING A PLACE.

The What’s Up Downtown Project (WUDP) aims to continue reducing barriers of access for diverse and resident driven pop-up activities, workshops, performances, and temporary installations in public space. In addition, WUDP acts as a bridge for residents to local stakeholders, programs and resources. This work is important to add authentic vitality to the city’s core, increase regular foot-traffic and foster a sense of stewardship within the community for the spaces and places in our city.

This project is housed at Greater Flint Arts Council (816 S. Saginaw St.) and currently operates out of suite 424 in The Ferris Wheel (615 S. Saginaw St.)

How do we achieve our mission?

The What’s Up Downtown Project operates in public spaces and with local partners throughout the year to execute small-audience, high-impact placemaking activities in several capacities. First, WUDP supports multiple recurring series including place-based walking tours (Flint City Tours), special interest activities (Clubs/Popups/Workshops/Fitness) and monthly music/art events (Vendor & Art Markets) which have been instrumental in building positivity, social buzz, and physical engagement around the city and its residents.

PROGRAMS

Flint City Tours(FCT) is a weekly program that activates local resident creatives to host 60 minute, place-based walking tours that showcase their individual talents, skills and knowledge in Downtown proper. Tours are offered free to all ages and cover a diverse range of topics such as poetry, literature, music, murals, history, fashion, fitness, comedy, photography and more. The current concept uses the “power of 10+”, a layered approach of multiple tours on the same days/times to create simultaneous experiences for many types of interests while naturally creating “intersection points” for guests to interact and engage with one another. These programs have had a positive impact on shifting negative narratives, increasing foot traffic and creating platforms for residents and visitors to connect with the people, places and programs the city has to offer.
