Cirque FLIP Fabrique - Blizzard
Cirque FLIP Fabrique - Blizzard
April 4, 2024 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
FIM Whiting Auditorium
With Blizzard, FLIP Fabrique takes you on a crazy, poetic and gentle journey in the dead of winter, and invites you to lose yourself in a moment of complete wonder. With performers at the peak of their artistic abilities and outstanding visual poetry, Blizzard promises to blow away everything in its path. What if winter took over? Not just outside, in the streets and in the fields, But also in the houses, in the bedrooms, underneath our clothes, and even our hearts. Everything, absolutely everything, buried under the snow, obliterated by a white-out. The north wind freezes time as it flows over us. Would it be a catastrophe? Or a chance to start over, to fix our mistakes? A new blank page will turn - in the shape of a blizzard.
What if winter has taken over?
Not just outside, in the streets and in the fields,
But also in the houses, in the bedrooms
Underneath our clothes, and even right into our hearts.
Everything, absolutely everything, buried under the snow,
Obliterated by a white-out.
The north wind freezes time as it flows over us.
Would it be a catastrophe?
Or a chance to start over,
To fix our mistakes?
A new blank page
In the shape of a blizzard.

In The Paint With Hanif Abdurraqib
In The Paint With Hanif Abdurraqib
April 6, 2024 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
132 West 2nd Street,Flint,48502,US
Comma Bookstore presents, 'In The Paint With Hanif Abdurraqib', a conversation about his newest book "There's Always This Year ON BASKETBALL AND ASCENSION". Moderated by Mama Sol.
.
.
.
Hanif Abdurraqib is a poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio, and the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant. His most recent book, A Little Devil in America, was the winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Gordon Burns Prize and a finalist for the National Book Award. His first collection of essays, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us, was named one of the books of the year by NPR, Esquire, BuzzFeed, O: The Oprah Magazine, Pitchfork, and Chicago Tribune, among others. Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest was a New York Times bestseller and a National Book Critics Circle Award and Kirkus Prize finalist and was longlisted for the National Book Award. He is a graduate of Beechcroft High School.
.
.
.
A poignant, personal reflection on basketball, life, and home—from the author of the National Book Award finalist A Little Devil in America “Mesmerizing . . . not only the most original sports book I’ve ever read but one of the most moving books I’ve ever read, period.”—Steve James, director of Hoop Dreams Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1990s, Hanif Abdurraqib witnessed a golden era of basketball, one in which legends like LeBron James were forged and countless others weren’t. His lifelong love of the game leads Abdurraqib into a lyrical, historical, and emotionally rich exploration of what it means to make it, who we think deserves success, the tension between excellence and expectation, and the very notion of role models, all of which he expertly weaves together with intimate, personal storytelling. “Here is where I would like to tell you about the form on my father’s jump shot,” Abdurraqib writes. “The truth, though, is that I saw my father shoot a basketball only one time.” There’s Always This Year is a triumph, brimming with joy, pain, solidarity, comfort, outrage, and hope. No matter the subject of his keen focus—whether it’s basketball, or music, or performance—Hanif Abdurraqib’s exquisite writing is always poetry, always profound, and always a clarion call to radically reimagine how we think about our culture, our country, and ourselves.

Shakespeare Behind Bars (Screening)
Shakespeare Behind Bars (Screening)
April 19, 2024 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
FIM Capitol Theatre
Winner of numerous festival awards and a Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury nomination, Shakespeare Behind Bars follows a year in the life of the renowned Shakespeare Behind Bars troupe at Luther Luckett Correctional Facility in Louisville, Kentucky.
Led by director Curt Tofteland, whose innovative work began in the mid-1990s, the prisoners cast themselves in roles reflecting their personal history and fate. Their individual stories, including information about their heinous crimes, are brilliantly interwoven with the plot of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest." As the inmates delve deeply into the characters they portray, they are forced to confront their personal demons.
The result is an extraordinary story about the creative process and the power of art to heal and redeem–in a place where the very act of participation in theatre is a human triumph and a means of personal liberation.
Shakespeare Behind Bars is a film by Hank Rogerson and Jilann Spitzmiller. Rogerson and Spitzmiller are a husband and wife team that has collaborated on projects for over 30 years, including the award-winning documentaries Still Dreaming, Homeland, & Circle of Stories.
Pre- and post-screening discussion/Q&A with Curt Tofteland

Symphony of the Soul: A Night of Music and Mindfulness

FIM Capitol Theatre
https://tickets.thefim.org/symphonysoul
Join us for the debut of Symphony of the Soul: A Night of Music and Mindfulness. This pioneering and heart enriching experience at the majestic FIM Capitol Theatre in Flint, Michigan, is a first-of-its-kind immersive symphonic breathwork journey led by Vivian Rosenthal, founder of Frequency Breathwork, featuring musicians of the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
This event marks the beginning of a new era in holistic wellness – where music and mindfulness come together in perfect harmony. This immersive and uplifting experience is designed to bring you into your heart, through the weaving together of meditation and live symphonic music, set against a backdrop of stunning sacred geometry projections.
The event begins with a short introduction to breathwork, a mindfulness meditation practice that is deeply calming and restorative. Participants are invited to sink into a state of tranquility, with the option to follow along with the guided breathwork meditation or simply soak in the sounds of the music and the beauty of the animated projections.
This event is more than a concert, it’s a space of connection. It’s a call to come together as a community, forging new friendships, uplifting ourselves and one another in a shared, transcendent experience.
Symphony of the Soul culminates in a moment of silent reflection, allowing the audience to internalize their experiences. The event closes with a feeling of rejuvenation, harmony, and a profound connection to both the self and the surrounding community. It's an unforgettable experience that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit, leaving participants with a sense of peace and well-being that lingers long after the final note has faded.
Proceeds from ticket sales support a pioneering breathwork study being held at the Diamond Rose retreat center in partnership with the Heroic Hearts Project, a non-profit organization serving U.S. military veterans. The study aims to show the efficacy of breathwork to treat PTSD and help alleviate mental health struggles.
